The contest invites stylists to present their vision of an inspirational, tasteful and fashion forward look suitable for their chosen model. This offer’s them the opportunity to express their creativity and talent through photography and stage performance

We had a chat quick chat with Kirst to get the inside scoop on entering this contest………

Common Thread

Where do you get your inspiration?

K:  I get a lot of my inspiration online.  Site’s like Instagram, Pinterest have a wealth of rousing imagery from all kinds of creatives.

How did you settle on the theme?

K: This is my first year entering, and I’ve decided to do something that I have never done before.  I stumbled across an image in a magazine that I fell in love with which sparked a fire and the need to put my twist on it.

What was the final result?

K: Although you’ll all have to patiently wait to see the images from the photo-shoot till after the first stage of judging is over, I can tell you it progressed and grew to be edgier than I initially had in mind.  I’m so pleased that I let the process unfold – I love what I created.  We worked alongside editorial photographer Mara Sommers, clothing stylist Ghalesha Singh and our very own William Richards doing makeup where as a team we brought the whole concept together.

What can you tell us about the hair?

K: What I love about the hair is it was something that took me out of my comfort zone to achieve. It tested me as it’s not a style or color I would use for every day.

Are there criteria you have to stick to?

K: Davines products are exclusively used as the contest is only open to salons who stock Davines. We document every aspect of creation from the conceptual mood boards to videoing the entire process of the haircut and colour as well as before and after photos.  We then cram two days of footage into a three-minute video and submit this along with the photoshoot images.

Anything else to add

K: I’m so grateful to my model Mali for letting me cut all of her hair off for the look I was after. Also, the team working alongside me behind the scenes, I wouldn’t have been able to pull this all together. I’m looking forward to seeing what the judges are looking for as I’m already starting to think about next year’s entry and what I’ll be able to create. Watch this space for when I can show off my work!

The Beauty of Giving – So They Can

We’re excited to announce that for November every retail item or 15-30min hair & scalp treatment sold will go towards helping support the So They Can charity.

The Charity was founded in 2009. After the 2007 Kenyan presidential election, tribal violence left 250,000 west Kenyans homeless.

After fleeing their homelands, the united nations stepped in and housed the refugees in temporary tents in the Nakuru showgrounds. Desperate to get the people back to their homes the government gave each family $100. About 6700 refugees banded together and bought a piece of land.  On this land, they erected their tents and became known as the ‘Pipeline Camp.’ The founders of So They Can visited the Pipeline Camp and were approached by the community to express their distress over the children’s education. Seeing a desperate need, they also saw an opportunity to help break the cycle of poverty, stopping the tribal violence.

So They Can Poster

The problem was that the existing public schools could not educate the children. Class sizes were between 60 to 200 children per teacher, and one textbook was shared between up to 5 students. A new school was needed.

The community took the founders to a 5-acre block of land 2kms from the Camp and was informed that it was owned by the Teachers’ Co-Operative. They asked them to speak with the Government and to build that school and to educate their children.

Negotiations began, resulting in a Memorandum of Understanding with the Kenyan Government outlining the government’s commitment to fund teachers, water, electricity, and roads. So They Can constructed the school and would hold the majority on the Board of Management overseeing its management.

In 2010 the doors to the Aberdare Ranges Primary School were open and So They Can was born.

Five years on and many lives have seen positive change, much has link, but there is still so much more to do.

Want a hair change? Here are our top places to find current hair inspiration.

You’ve had the same doo for some time; the seasons have changed or to put it frankly your board and so over your hair right now.

Where for out thou inspiration?  And looks we love heading into Summer.

#1 – Your hairdresser
If you’ve been with your hairdresser for some time now, it’s highly likely you trust them (well we’d like to think so). Ask them their opinion on what change they’d recommend for you, your hair type, lifestyle and even your budget. Before you mention you’re after a change, have a quiet word to your self about how much change your needing. To some clients, change is a tiny bit more than their usual trim and a subtle quarter of a shade darker in colour. Others it’s going from hair halfway down their back, to a cute pixie crop and black to platinum. Are you the client who needs to have a consult with your hairdresser before the actual doo day, or are you of spontaneous nature and jump in all guns blazing? Top tip – if you desperately want a colour change and you’re the impulsive type, you definitely should have a quick chat with your hairdresser beforehand rather than assuming that your usual colour booking will still be enough time to accommodate the change you’re after. Most colour changes of the extreme nature can take a lot more time and processes to achieve – remember we don’t carry wands.

Colour Tones

#2 – Fashion websites
Our fav go-to site for supercurrent hair and fashion trends is After all, how could you disagree with a look hot off the runway?

#3 – Instagram, Pinterest, and other Social Media Platforms
The world of social media has a wealth of inspiration for all kinds of things. It’s a great place to start identifying what it is that you’re attracted to when it comes to the shape of a cut or tone of colour. However, viewer beware – there’s a lot of crap on there too.
Take into account how the hair is styled and will you honestly be willing to put the effort in daily for it to look like that. Unfortunately, when it comes to hair colour images on social media – there is not a lot out there that have not been altered either by a light ring or a filter. Ensure to ask your stylist if this colour is achievable on your hair, will it suit your skin tone and how many sessions it will take till you rock that tone.

#4 – Google
Oh, wise oracle google – tell me what I should do with my hair! There’s nothing like a quick search on Google to spark ideas. Again, viewer beware – Uncle google will give you what you ask for, so if you search “best hair to suit a 50-year-old”, you’ll get a bunch of 50-year-olds, regardless of what era.

Treat yourself and your hair

At home, we’ll be sowing our summer veggie seeds and planting new plants for a splash colour. You’ll spend the time picking out the best specimens in the store. You only want the best start for your plant babies, so you get all the primers for soil, take the time to work their new home, religiously water and watch them grow…

Righto. “So what’s your point here?” you ask. We draw on this same concept by nourishing your scalp to promote healthier hair growth.

Prevention and ageing aren’t new words in the beauty industry. I’m sure we’ve all spent time at some point at the beauty salon to maintain that glowing complexion and by keeping a healthy lifestyle with the right food, exercise, not smoking, drinking plenty of water, etc, etc. All the things we know we are meant to do to look after that healthy lifestyle. It goes for promoting a good soil bed for a healthy and balanced scalp, thus healthy strong hair to follow.

Let’s be realistic here – Our poor hair gets damaged pretty quickly, whether it be that daily swim, to much sun, heat or chemicals. I’m sure most of us can admit that our hair and scalps not better off for it. Hate to sound like a broken record here – prevention where possible then nourish and maintain regularly is the key!

Our in-salon treatments are formulated to target your hair and wellbeing concerns. Whether your hair is parched and is in need of intense hydration, is utterly naffed from overheating and colouring, your scalp’s throwing a hissy fit and is dry or oily, or you just need (or want, no judgment!) a more extended head massage to ease tension from your manic week.

Check out our treatment menu, ranging from Olaplex infusion, Hair Infusion, Deluxe Infusion, Spring Clean Detoxifying Infusion to an Indian Head Massage we will customise a treatment just for you.

So why not unwind and have that cocktail for your hair. It would be rude not too.

Davines Renewing

Prevention is the best medicine. We’ve all heard this right, but probably not about our hair products.

The Davines philosophy is not out of the norm, what you put in your body will affect what you see on the outside.

Welcome to the team William

It feels like yesterday….imagine the Breakfast Club final field scene fist pumping into the air – that was me. I jumped with excitement after my surprise job interview with Tracy on the 31st March.

Oh Honey, I smashed it; I had a trial the following Saturday Arhhh! Then was offered part time, to work late nights and Saturdays. More Fist pumping and jumping around.

My First week at Common Thread was CRAZY. I came into it after leaving school and being in limbo for five months, Oh did I also mention I had landed a place in a makeup course for the next four months. That’s me people everything or nothing. Moving from client to team member was a dream. I was learning so much every day and never failed to go home at the end of the day feeling like I’d accomplished something and content that this was a place I belonged in.

Break open the champagne I’ve graduated from my course and can get into this full-time work thing. I loved my course, but I was feeling a pull towards Common Thread. After commuting every day between Newmarket to Pukekohe the train tracks and I had a love hate relationship. But I’m pleased to report I ended that relationship. Being local is so much easier.

The whole team has always treated me so kindly and respectfully. And have helped me every day throughout my journey at Common Thread, and I couldn’t be happier and share that feeling with all our clients.

So look out for me I will be here.

Brooke’s Allilon Training

Brooke’s back from her ALLILON Training, here’s a snippet of what she got up to…

I packed my bags Saturday night ready for my five-night stay at a Ponsonby Airbnb, all ready for my four-day class.

It was interesting the other two in my class have been hairdressing for twenty or so years and another for eight years and they were as hyped as me to learn these new ways.

Here’s a snippet on Allilon’s philosophy;

We believe that any tool or technique can be powerful in knowledgeable hands.

Alongside understanding the When, Why and How? Allilon has created The Allilon language of hair with the purpose of uniting hairdressers all around the globe with one common language helping standardise our industry and the way education is shared.

Coming to the end of my Common Thread training with Tracy, I can’t believe how lucky I am to have had the opportunity to attend the Allilon Technical Cutting on my side. I’m excited to share this education not only with the team but also with Tracy’s clients that I am looking after while she is on leave.

Everyone’s been talking about Olaplex for a while now. And it’s no wonder: as hair colour trends get more frequent and more experimental, the promise of a salon and home treatment that claims to restore your hair back to its virgin state even as your colour is being applied is alluring indeed. Hairdressers are calling it the “Holy Grail of hair care”.

Even if you suffer from Split Ends, Dry, Frizzy, Brittle, hard to blow dry, brassy tones, actually if you just have hair on your head that has heat or colour thrown at it – then OLAPLEX is for you.

So how does it work? The best way to explain it is to think about having weak bones. You would have to take calcium to strengthen bones from the inside. This won’t, however, change the way your skin feels to touch if you want soft feeling skin you need to apply moisturiser. And, let’s face it you need to do this all the time to achieve smooth skin. Is a women’s job ever done?

Ok, so it’s the same for your hair. You would apply OLAPLEX to mend and strengthen the inner structure of your hair. But just like the skin if you want your hair to look and feel glossy, you will need something to the outer layer.

In a (technical) nutshell, Olaplex is a turbo-charged bond reforming product that repairs disulphate sulfur bonds within the hair structure, which can be broken down by heat, colouring or other chemical treatments.

OLAPLEX is truly the “holy grail” of hair repair. Not only do we use it in the salon as an additive in your colour for longevity, as a treatment but you there is also OLAPEX No.3 that you can take home and use as regularly as you like. Our personal favourite is to apply OLAPLEX No.3 to dampened hair when we get home, sleep with it on (don’t worry ladies it doesn’t stain the pillow cases) and wash it out the next morning. You can also leave it on for as little as 15 minutes to as long as 12 hours, as long as it is wet on your hair, it is still working. Voila, your hair is on its way back to its virgin state.

We even found at a recent training that it is perfect as a styling product for wirey or curly hair, Children’s tangled hair and ladies even the man in your life beard will benefit from it.  So to say this product is a must is an understatement.
