Common Thread

Where do you get your inspiration?

K:  I get a lot of my inspiration online.  Site’s like Instagram, Pinterest have a wealth of rousing imagery from all kinds of creatives.

How did you settle on the theme?

K: This is my first year entering, and I’ve decided to do something that I have never done before.  I stumbled across an image in a magazine that I fell in love with which sparked a fire and the need to put my twist on it.

What was the final result?

K: Although you’ll all have to patiently wait to see the images from the photo-shoot till after the first stage of judging is over, I can tell you it progressed and grew to be edgier than I initially had in mind.  I’m so pleased that I let the process unfold – I love what I created.  We worked alongside editorial photographer Mara Sommers, clothing stylist Ghalesha Singh and our very own William Richards doing makeup where as a team we brought the whole concept together.

What can you tell us about the hair?

K: What I love about the hair is it was something that took me out of my comfort zone to achieve. It tested me as it’s not a style or color I would use for every day.

Are there criteria you have to stick to?

K: Davines products are exclusively used as the contest is only open to salons who stock Davines. We document every aspect of creation from the conceptual mood boards to videoing the entire process of the haircut and colour as well as before and after photos.  We then cram two days of footage into a three-minute video and submit this along with the photoshoot images.

Anything else to add

K: I’m so grateful to my model Mali for letting me cut all of her hair off for the look I was after. Also, the team working alongside me behind the scenes, I wouldn’t have been able to pull this all together. I’m looking forward to seeing what the judges are looking for as I’m already starting to think about next year’s entry and what I’ll be able to create. Watch this space for when I can show off my work!
