Thank you from ‘so they can’

Back in October, YOU, our gorgeous clients helped raise funds to donate to “So They Can” charity.

So They Can want to share with you all where and how your contribution has helped.

We’re proud to have been part of this, and we’re sure you are too.

Trying to start to say thank you and explain where your funds raised went is hard. I want to take you there!

The school, Aberdare Ranges was built by So They Can and now educates 1080 kids. They gave us a Royal welcome!

The school also realized the kids were hungry. So they feed them! Breakfast, lunch and for those who need it, dinner too.

Many of the kids come from the displaced person camp nearby. This was a tented camp after the violent elections in 2006. It now has more permanent shelters. These families escaped with nothing but their lives. Some have been assisted (by STC Microfinance) like Margaret, to set up businesses. Her charcoal sales and shop are doing so well she wants to set up a photocopying business! For those women making sellable goods, an online shop has been set up – they also have a shop at the Miti Mingi Village. It’s another example of how STC are empowering women to rise up and be able to support themselves and their families. I bought a lot!

There are also many kids living in the dump that STC has housed in Miti Mingi Village. Here there are also kids who have lost their parents.  107 kids are living here. They have their own beds, vegetable plots, and five cows!

There are not many outside toys, but the kids find stuff to do at the weekends. Going out of the compound isn’t safe.

STC pays all expenses for these kids. They still don’t have a lot, but they are safe and happy.

Eight kids are living in houses with a ‘mum’. My best friend Lynne is a trauma specialist, and she spent a week helping the mums understand trauma in kids and how they can assist their families in healing. I did HR stuff at the town office and helped Lynne at the end of each day build the kids knowledge of how to self- regulate.

Your funds have helped do so much. They have helped…

Provide food, education, purchase uniform’s and clothes, provide medical assistance, buy toys and crafts, educate the staff, build homes and classrooms.

You have made a difference. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

Please pass on our gratitude to your clients.

With much love & warmth

I just can’t do it… but I still love that fresh, smooth blow-wave feel

You hear this word KERATIN, being thrown around in hair products and services. But what does it do and what is it?

We talk to Keratin Specialist Kirsty at the salon about this holey grail of a hair treatment.

When I’m first chatting with my clients, I always ask ‘How’s your hair been’? Dry, frizzy, it takes longer to do then you have time for and then end up in a hair catastrophe the moment you step outside, are all replies I hear too often.

If you find that it is all too much to deal with, but you’d still love that fresh, smooth blow-wave feel and look – this is the answer you’ve been searching for.

We’ve all heard you say, ‘Now, can you come home with me and do my hair every morning’? ‘I’ll never be able to get my hair to look like you do.’

We understand that it’s always better when someone else does your hair. And to be honest, if our clients were as good at doing their hair as we are – we’d all be out of a job!

What if I was to tell you that life could be a lot faster, more comfortable and less stressful to achieve a salon blow-wave at home?

Speaking for myself, even as a highly trained professional – I too know the struggle is real.

Cezanne Keratin Smoothing Treatment to the rescue!

I’ve personally had a Cezanne Keratin Smoothing Treatment done a few times now and now cannot live without it. I would spend up to 50 minutes to blow-dry and straighten my hair, only to find I’d look like Lionel after a few hours! Since having a Cezanne Keratin Smoothing Treatment, it now only takes me 25-30 minutes to blow-dry my hair, and I no longer need to straighten afterward. (BONUS, less heat damage to my hair!) Even a little rain no longer sends me running for the hills.

71DSZhoEveL._SY450_What is Keratin?

Keratin is a protein found in the hair, skin and nails.
Daily exposure to pollution, chemicals and blow-drying, all damage the hair of is natural keratin. Once the keratin from your hair is depleted, your inner hair (cortex) swell’s as the outer (cuticle) is exposed to more damage. Infusing keratin back into your hair is the best option to get your lost protein back.

Ladies (why do men get all the good genes?) as we get older our hair starts to produce significantly less protein and lipids (moisture), resulting in – you guessed it, dryer frizzier hair. Before Keratin Smoothing Treatment’s, oils and heavy conditioning were the most accessible form of treating fluffy hair. Treating the hair this way, often leaves the hair waterlogged and takes much longer to dry. Who’s got time for that?

Nowadays, thankfully we have Cezanne Keratin Smoothing Treatment. It’s taken the hairdressing world by storm and mine also.

What is Keratin Smoothing Treatment and how does it work?

It’s a process that binds keratin back into the structure of the hair, which help’s it to be protected it from daily torture. We infuse in the Keratin Smoothing Treatment by blow-drying, followed by sealing it in by running a low heat iron over each section.

What kind do we use at Common Thread and why?
We use a Keratin Smoothing Treatment called ‘Cezanne’. The reason we love and wouldn’t use anything else is that Cezanne is free of all the bad boy chemicals you find in other Keratins. It’s free from formaldehyde, carcinogens or other dangerous chemicals like parabens, sulphates, and phthalates.

I’ve heard Keratin Smoothing Treatments are super expensive…
They sure used to be. When they first come out, depending on what brand and process a salon was using you’d be looking at $450-$700. Good news is, with more demand from our distributors we now can pass on the reduced price to you as clients. Our Cezanne Keratin Smoothing Treatments now start from $170.

Now, do you want styling your hair to be easier, faster and less stressful?

Containing essential fatty oils for hair that is screaming out in need of hydration, enzymes that help combat the causes of hair devastation and even royal jelly fit for a queen.

Let me tell you a little story about a client of mine I prescribed the Nourishing range to:

When Karen came to chat with me, she’d been getting a perm done for years without any issues and then BOOM a permtastrophe had struck. The perm solution had destructed her hair leaving it brittle and frail. I knew precisely which Davines Naturaltech family to go to and whipped her up a cocktail of a hair routine personalized just for her hair’s taste.

  • Nourishing Shampoo and Vegetarian Miracle Conditioner to be used twice a week
  • Assisted by an Olaplex #3 once a fortnight
  • A visit to me in the salon every other week for intensive treatment of Olaplex #1&2 accompanied by a Nourishing restructuring miracle treatment for six weeks.

The results were terrific, and she still gets her perms with no further issues.

Feel like this could be what you need?  Be sure to grab Will and have a chat with him when you’re at Common Thread next.

Say goodbye to the three F’s – fine, fragile, and falling out…

Our Davines Naturaltech Specialist Will has plenty of advice when it comes to the specific problems with hair and scalp.

Today he’s talking the three F’s… FINE, FRAGILE and FALLING OUT

Both males and females can be victims to the scalp to peeking through the strands of your hair.  If it’s a sudden occurrence, it’s best to chat with your doctor and explore options to remedy the situation.

Here’s some common causes for the three F’s

naive torture

The way you regularly treat your hair may have a bearing on the condition and thickness of your hair. Do you routinely use hair extensions or tie your hair super tight in the same spot over and over causing your hair to fall out?  The fancy name for this is called “traction alopecia,” which is a thinning or balding due to excessive pulling and braiding.  Ease up and loosen things off a little girlfriend!  Using too many chemical processes or styling your hair roughly with heated styling tools can also lead to thinning, especially for those prone to fine, weak hair.

Stress monkey

Stress and trauma can cause your hair to thin.  When you experience something stressful, such as sickness or death in the family, a divorce or a high-stress job, your growing hairs are pushed into a resting phase instead of continuing the growth cycle, so your hair appears to be finer and thinner.  The hormone Cortisol is the one to thank for this. Once you chill out and regain some peace in your life, the hair likely will begin to grow again – usually after three months.

the complicated condition

Fine, thin hair could be the result of a medical condition. Thyroid and hormonal issues can all cause hair to become finer and thinner it’s essential to see your doctor for testing to rule out a possible medical problem as the underlying cause.

pill popper

Some medications cause your hair to fall out or thin over time. Some of these medications include blood thinners, antidepressants, and even contraception. If you notice a change in your hair after starting a new medication and it’s bothering you, see your doctor about choosing another type of medication to manage your condition.

you are what you eat

Watch what you put in your mouth… Malnourishment can all cause hair to become finer and thinner. The seed won’t grow if the soils are dire. Nutrients that contribute to hair and scalp health include silica, omega’s, niacin, biotin, zinc, and vitamins A, B6, and C. A varied diet based on the basic food groups should provide ample amounts of these nutrients. Goodbye processed crap – Wholefoods all the way!

Thanks to your parents

If you have a family history of fine, thin hair, then it may be a fact of life for you and your family. Male pattern baldness is the most common reason for thinning hair in men.  Even if you’re a woman with fine, thin hair, it could merely be genetics that causes hair to grow finely, thin with age or fall out altogether.

Will’s 3 step recipe to combat the three F’s

  1. Feed your follicles the good stuff.  Eat wholefoods and supplement with Zinc, Silica, and Omega.
  2. Come in and talk to me about the Naturaltech Energizing line.  ENERGIZING stimulates circulation and new hair growth using caffeine phytoceuticals and improves hair elasticity, preventing loss and breakage.  It also reinforces weak hair to avoid breakage. I’ll personally prescribe you whats best to combat your F issue!
  3. Chill out. Schedule in some calm time by taking a morning walk or a daily meditation practice. Breathe and lower your Cortisol levels.

Want a hair change? Here are our top places to find current hair inspiration.

You’ve had the same doo for some time; the seasons have changed or to put it frankly your board and so over your hair right now.

Where for out thou inspiration?  And looks we love heading into Summer.

#1 – Your hairdresser
If you’ve been with your hairdresser for some time now, it’s highly likely you trust them (well we’d like to think so). Ask them their opinion on what change they’d recommend for you, your hair type, lifestyle and even your budget. Before you mention you’re after a change, have a quiet word to your self about how much change your needing. To some clients, change is a tiny bit more than their usual trim and a subtle quarter of a shade darker in colour. Others it’s going from hair halfway down their back, to a cute pixie crop and black to platinum. Are you the client who needs to have a consult with your hairdresser before the actual doo day, or are you of spontaneous nature and jump in all guns blazing? Top tip – if you desperately want a colour change and you’re the impulsive type, you definitely should have a quick chat with your hairdresser beforehand rather than assuming that your usual colour booking will still be enough time to accommodate the change you’re after. Most colour changes of the extreme nature can take a lot more time and processes to achieve – remember we don’t carry wands.

Colour Tones

#2 – Fashion websites
Our fav go-to site for supercurrent hair and fashion trends is After all, how could you disagree with a look hot off the runway?

#3 – Instagram, Pinterest, and other Social Media Platforms
The world of social media has a wealth of inspiration for all kinds of things. It’s a great place to start identifying what it is that you’re attracted to when it comes to the shape of a cut or tone of colour. However, viewer beware – there’s a lot of crap on there too.
Take into account how the hair is styled and will you honestly be willing to put the effort in daily for it to look like that. Unfortunately, when it comes to hair colour images on social media – there is not a lot out there that have not been altered either by a light ring or a filter. Ensure to ask your stylist if this colour is achievable on your hair, will it suit your skin tone and how many sessions it will take till you rock that tone.

#4 – Google
Oh, wise oracle google – tell me what I should do with my hair! There’s nothing like a quick search on Google to spark ideas. Again, viewer beware – Uncle google will give you what you ask for, so if you search “best hair to suit a 50-year-old”, you’ll get a bunch of 50-year-olds, regardless of what era.

Tracy and the team at Common Thread

We sip tea and talk shop with Common Thread owner Tracy Sarjant Roberts

Hair Salon Pukekohe Common Thread Director Tracy Sarjant Roberts

When and why did you launch your salon?

14/8/12. After being based in Auckland’s CBD for the first 11 years of my career, I wanted to create a nurturing, real space. For clients in a fast-paced world, it’s nice to be able to provide a getaway where the focus is on them. For my team, I love to be part of growing their goals, tools, and confidence and only wish to be part of the chapter of their career stories.

Assisting my salon by using boutique brands has been a rock for many of the decisions we make at Common Thread. The most important decisions we’ve made are based around our wellbeing as hairdressers. Unfortunately, a close family member has suffered through ill health for the past ten years, so I made a conscious decision that I didn’t want to work with anything that would put my clients, staff and own health at risk.

Being able to make choices that are progressive and conscious is the primary drive behind launching Common Thread.

Describe Common Thread in 10 words or less.

Thoughtful, escape, inviting, talented, fresh, upcycled, restorative, progressive, conscious, sassy.

Name three key muses/inspirations.
1. Good friend and past colleague Jason Chong Li – I have watched Jase grow to the amazing hair ninja he is today. He is by far the most driven and hard working hairdresser I know. Everything Jase has achieved is 100% him – he knows who he is, what he wants and he will do whatever it takes to fulfil it!
2. Start with Why author Simon Sinek – Every time I get a bit foggy with why and what I’m doing I come back to this book. It inspires me by challenging my thought process and is the driving force behind not becoming a robot overwhelmed by the daily grind.
3. Loyal client and ex-chief executive of Mental Health Foundation Judi Clements – I’ve been fortunate enough to be Judi’s hair artist for the best part of ten years now. I say ‘artist’ because that’s what she allows me to be. Judi is one of the biggest inspirations to me because she is living proof of being true to yourself, disregarding criticism and actions life hurdles as just a slight detour.

Your favourite quote?

“It is not the length of life, but the depth.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

What’s your favourite product and why?

Olaplex – I love how it maintains the hair’s integrity and allows us as colourists to achieve greater looks for our clients.
A close second would be R+Co AIRCRAFT – best styling product EVER!!  I love how it can change the most conservative do into Ms. Sassy Pants.

What’s the most valuable thing you’ve learned as a hairdresser/salon owner?

Be present, don’t take things personally and only react when you’re calm.

Describe your approach to hair in 10 words or less.

Intuitive, control, ageless, diverse, spontaneous, artist, confident, daring and professional.

What’s your greatest dream as a salon owner/stylist?
Continue to contribute to the more talented next generation of hairdressers.  We spend the first years of our career trying to master the technical aspect of hairdressing and learn the rest by osmosis.

I’d love to educate our up-and-comings into being masters of communication, adding value and running their own business within a business.

As day-to-day hairdressers we wear a lot of hats, and if we had all the right tools from the beginning then we would be able to offer our clients so much more than just a hair style.

We’ve heard you personally no longer take on new clients, why is this?

There’re many reasons.  I made this decision a couple of years ago, after quickly establishing my clientele after opening the salon.  It’s mostly around working on the business not just in the business, and being open and honest about being human and not being able to do everything without compromising my own, my clients and team’s expectations.

It’s important to me, my clients and team that I stay progressive and creatively inspired.  And slogging away for twelve hours a day, doing back to back clients with no room for adjustment or error doesn’t leave much room to nourish one’s creative soul.

Out of respect for my clients, being so heavily booked they can’t reschedule their appointment without waiting for another two months is just absurd and frustrating for both of us – and trust me, unlike other hairdressers I’ve come across in the past, it does nothing for my ego.

It’s why I spend a lot of time with my team and why we are so focused on education at Common Thread.  My team are incredibly talented and driven for the right reasons.  We all work in close collaboration with each other and our clients, and it’s important that we all are available to add original opinion where our clients need it.
